Burke County Public Schools gifted referrals for current kindergarten through eighth grade will be Feb. 21-28. A student may be referred for consideration for gifted education services by teachers, counselors, administrators, parents/ guardians, peers, self and other individuals with knowledge of the student’s abilities. To be eligible, a student must qualify through a multiple-criteria assessment process by meeting the criteria in any three of the following four areas, using criteria established by GaDOE: mental ability, achievement, creativity and motivation. The spring testing window is March 1-May 19. To refer a child for screening or if you have questions, please contact the child’s school.


The African American Heritage Awards and Reception will be held at 5 p.m. at Mt. Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church in celebration of African American History Month.

A free lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 841 Jones Ave., Waynesboro. Anyone who wants or needs a meal is welcome. Bags of groceries will be available.

Free Diabetic Teaching will be offered in the Burke Medical Center classroom, 6-8 p.m. The course is designed to help diabetics learn how to better control their diabetes through healthy eating. Participants should eat before they come and are encouraged to bring along their partners or anyone who helps with food preparation. Please enter through Emergency Room waiting area.
