Two local ladies were recently honored by the Mayor and City of Waynesboro.

As part of the Uplift Project, Mayor Greg Carswell spotlighted the pair as “Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things.”

First, he recognized eightyear old tennis sensation Leila Garrison Hunter, who recently won first place in her age group’s sectionals and eastern regionals. She also participated in the prestigious Little Mo Nationals in Austin, Texas, earlier this month and won the championship title.

“She learned the game at age five and continues under Coach Joe Blackenbaker at Citizens Park and MACH Academy in Augusta under the tutelage of Mark O’Neil … and represents the Bird Dog Capital of the World very well,” Mayor Carswell read from the proclamation he gave to the young athlete. “We recognize Ms. Hunter for her accomplishments and encourage her to keep progressing and making great strides. She is a wonderful example of being able to accomplish whatever you set your mind to.”

Next, Shaquana Scott-Lewis was recognized for the outreach she has provided to families facing the devastation of losing a child. “She took a tragedy she faced in her life and turned it into a triumph,” Carswell said, adding that since the loss of her child, Kennariya, she has become a certified life coach and formed the organization Birth without Birth, an infant loss support group. “We do hereby honor the love and support Mrs. Scott-Lewis gives to so many hurting families in their time of need … we are grateful to her and all that she offers Waynesboro and the world.”
