Suspect flees, avoids arrest

A man, pulled over for tinted windows and an expired tag, fled on foot, after a Burke County Sheriff’s deputy found 5 large bags of marijuana in the vehicle.

Sgt. Eric McCants pulled over a vehicle driven by Tavarious Devouil Sunday, Feb. 20 on Highway 56 South near the Emanuel County Line. McCants asked Devouil to lean against the patrol car as the officer conducted a search of the vehicle Devouil claimed belonged to his uncle.

Devouil suddenly fled on foot toward Midville. Members of road patrol and crime suppression, along with K9, arrived on the scene, but were unsuccessful in apprehending the suspect. During the search, citizens informed deputies that a black male matching Devouil’s description knocked on nearby residence doors attempting to get a ride to Swainsboro.

Approximately 5 pounds of marijuana were found in the vehicle. Devouil has been charged with Possession of Marijuana and Misdemeanor Obstruction. Warrants have been issued for his arrest.
