Gaines and Kathryn Story of Waynesboro were chosen as the Central Region Farm Family for 2021 and state runner up at the Georgia Young Farmer Convention held this past January.

Allie Crockett, the Burke County Young Farmer Advisor, said, “The Georgia Young Farmers (GYFA) believes that today’s young farm families hold Georgia’s agricultural future in their hands. They must reach their full potential if that future is to be bright for them, for their state and for agriculture in general.”

“Throughout Georgia there are outstanding young farm families working and planning for the future, and they deserve recognition,” Crockett added.

Each year the GYFA hosts a Farm Family contest. Each region of the state receives many applications for the honor.

The Georgia Development Authority has been a supporter of the Georgia Young Farmers Association and Agricultural Education for many years. “Sponsoring the Farm Family contest is one way for the Georgia Development Authority to emphasize the importance of the people making the agriculture industry strong,” according to a news release.

An outstanding family is selected from each of the three regions based on their level of success in meeting the program’s goals. These goals include promoting efficient management of land, labor, and capital in farming, developing leadership necessary to propel the agriculture industry forward, advancing the philosophy of community service and ensuring the applications of sound environmental practices.
