The Spartans golf team, above, from left, Michael Quick, Alex Clemens, Dawson Atkinson, Carter Mobley, Jay Mobley and Ben Murray, won the Region 2-AA golf championship Monday afternoon in Waynesboro.
They haven’t beaten Frederica Academy all season, but that changed Monday afternoon.
Edmund Burke Academy’s golf team upset the Frederica Knights on the greens during the Region 2-AA golf tournament. The Spartans shot 313 as a team to win the region title. Frederica finished in second place, three strokes behind Edmund Burke.
Carter Mobley led EBA in scoring, shooting a round of 73 for the day. Mobley easily beat the rest of his competition, which included professional golfer Davis Love III’s son Dru Love, to claim low-medalist honors. His teammate, Dawson Atkinson shot his lowest round of the season, 76, to finish second overall. Jay Mobley shot 80, while Alex Clemens turned in an 84. Michael Quick and Ben Murray both shot 88. Carter Mobley and Atkinson were both named to the all-region team.
The Knights had four golfers to shoot 79, but their team total of 316 wasn’t enough to overtake the Spartans. Robert Toombs Christian Academy finished in third place with a team score of 417, while Curtis Baptist shot 444 to take fourth place. This is the first time in six years the Spartans have won the region championship. Their coach, Mike Smith, was named the Region-2AA Coach of the Year.
Edmund Burke will compete against Frederica again on Monday for a state title. They will also face stronger competition, as teams from other regions will be in the hunt.
The Spartans will have to beat the Knights on their home course at Jekyll Island if they want the state title.
