Sardis refuses to buy beloved steam engine

The little steam engine that has been an icon for decades can’t seem to find its place in Sardis.

Robert Bell approached the City Council March 15 with an offer to sell the old steam engine for $12,000.

Councilwoman Rolene Oliver voiced her opposition to the purchase. Mayor Roger Lane stated that the city does not have the money to pay what Bell asked. City Attorney Chris Dube advised Bell that he must show official documentation of ownership before he can offer to the sell the engine and advised the panel not to purchase it without official documentation.

After a motion made by Oliver and seconded by Councilman Leroy Lane, the council voted to decline Bell’s offer. Bell stated he will move forward with plans to remove the steam engine from the T.E. Transportation Park, but insisted the city needs to replace the tongue on the engine before he can move it.

The mayor said the city never agreed to replace the tongue.
