The best quality cotton in the state is right here in Burke County.

Jacob Sandeford, Midville Warehouse, was recently recognized at the 2016 Georgia Quality Cotton Awards. He received the overall Best Cotton Award, which is given to the state’s cotton producer with the highest loan value and premium. For 2016, Sandeford had a loan value of 57.52 cents per pound and a premium of 5.52 cents per pound. He, alongside County Extension Agent Peyton Sapp, were also named the winners in the less than 500 acres category for their region.

Other winners in Region 2 included Trevor Cobb Farms of Washington County with agent Brent Allen (500 to 1,000 acres) and Smith Farms of Jefferson County with agent Pam Sapp (greater than 1,000 acres).

According to Chris Chammoun, Georgia Cotton Commission, the awards are given in each of the three cotton acreage categories within the four regions of the state. “Winners in these categories are determined by the loan value and premiums of their cotton. The winners’ excellent achievements are due largely to their management practices and expertise,” he said in a press release issued last week. “The purpose of the awards is to recognize producers and ginners of high-quality cotton fiber and to identify their general management practices for the benefit of other growers.”

The producers and their gins each earned a plaque, with the winning producers also receiving a $500 cash award. Each winner’s county extension agent was also recognized, “as they work closely with the farmers during the growing season,” Chammoun said.

The awards, which were presented at the Georgia Cotton Commission’s 10th Annual Meeting and UGA Cotton Production Workshop held last month in Tifton, are co-sponsored by the Georgia Cotton Commission and Bayer Crop- Science and administered by the University of Georgia Cotton Team.
