Residents to appeal construction of mobile home park on Four Points

Residents of Four Points Road will soon have the opportunity to discuss their concerns and possibly stop the construction of a mobile home park in their neighborhood.

The Burke County Board of Commissioners unanimously agreed to hold a hearing concerning the matter after receiving several letters from affected property owners.

In the letters, the residents requested that the board overturn the decision previously made by the planning commission to allow Brad and Terri Layer, of Waynesboro, to develop a mobile home site on the property they purchased.

During the board’s meeting, county administrator Merv Waldrop suggested the commissioners give the residents an opportunity to speak, and chairman Jimmy Dixon agreed, saying that all parties involved would need to attend. “We’ll hear all sides of it,” he said.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m., April 11, prior to the board’s regular meeting.

In their letters, residents expressed concerns over the amount of authority the planning commission has. They wrote: “If the planning commission does not report to the board of commissioners, then who do they answer to? If a 30 unit trailer park has been approved by the planning commission without even one county commissioner’s knowledge of such a proposal, then who is the governing authority for the planning commission?”

The residents allege that the Land Development Code is “vague and outdated,” and Waldrop pointed out that it is not specific about the conditions for an appeal either.

During the commissioners’ February meeting, residents claimed to hold covenants which would prevent the construction of a trailer park on the property in question.

The Layers say the development is a legitimate real estate opportunity which will be neat and well managed.
