Waynesboro police have a room full of toys to give away.
Officers spent the weekend picking out Barbies, blocks and board games, and now they’re looking for children to take them home this Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m.
“It’s the holidays and we want to give back,” Investigator Charles Prescott said, explaining the project was spurred by the realization of how many incarcerated fathers will remain in jail over the Christmas holiday and that their children may subsequently do without.
While the giveaway is open to any child living in Burke County, officers are relying on good faith to ensure the toys go to children in need.
No IDs or financial documents are required, but each child must be present to receive a toy.
Investigator Prescott said the toys were donated by Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Walmart, and additional gifts were purchased by Major Mary Bennett.
The toys will be given away on a first-come basis (depending on age/gender appropriateness) in the main lobby of the Myrick Street police headquarters.
