Mayor, council seats to be decided Tuesday



 

 

The race for Waynesboro’s mayor will be decided over the next five days, as will council seats in three cities.

Polls will be open 7 a.m.-7p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8 to fill two seats in Waynesboro and one each in Midville and Sardis.

In Waynesboro, 2,744 voters are registered to cast ballots in the mayoral race. Incumbent George DeLoach is opposed by former vice-mayor Pauline Jenkins, who lost by 22 votes in their last faceoff, and newcomer Greg Carswell.

In Waynesboro’s Ward 3, 827 voters will decide whether to give their city council seat to incumbent Willie Roy Williams or candidates Barrett Madison, Bobby Givens or Brenda Lewis.

Sardis’ sole contested race is for an “at large” city council seat for which Val Prescott and Zenobia Freeman have both qualified. According to city officials, 627 voters are registered.

Midville’s race, which is also for a council seat, comes down to incumbent Scotty Womack and candidate Jennifer Drew. Around 260 residents are registered to vote in the election.

Early/advance voting in all three cities continues through Friday, Nov. 4. As of late Tuesday morning, around 108 residents had already cast ballots in Waynesboro and another 277 ballots had been mailed, according to Barbara Hammett, executive director of Burke County Elections and Registration.
