Ninth traffic fatality of 2017 reported

A 37-year-old South Carolina man has died from injuries he received in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Highway 56 south of Waynesboro.

At about 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, Sayne Juarez Sosa was driving his 1994 Ford Explorer west on Byne-Sunshine Road when he failed to yield at the intersection with Highway 56. His vehicle collided with a southbound truck driven by 62-year-old Joe David Berry of Saluda, S.C.

According to a Georgia State Patrol report, the truck driver said he was afraid the other driver was travelling too fast to stop at the stop sign and felt the collision moments later. Traffice was blocked for several hours as Burke County EMA worked to extract Sosa from his vehicle with the aid of Jaws of Life. He was transported to Augusta University Hospital where he later died.

Authorities reported that Sosa had no identification papers with him and the Explorer had a false South Carolina tag. According to the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, there are no records of insurance coverage on the vehicle.

This marks the ninth traffic fatality in Burke County for 2017.
