Missing child report launches investigation

Police located a five-yearold who went missing early Saturday morning but are now looking into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

According to Investigator Claude Wade of the Waynesboro Police Depart- ment, officers were called to a Briarwood apartment around 4 a.m. Saturday after the child’s mother reported she hadn’t seen him since she went to bed at 1 a.m. and left him sleeping on the couch.

She told police she’d been searching for him since 2:15 a.m. when her boyfriend came home and noticed the child was missing.

After a massive door-todoor search of the complex and surrounding neighborhood, the boy was found asleep at a neighbor’s house around 6:30 a.m.

Since then, however, a number of people have contacted police to say the boy wasn’t at home when his mother claimed he was.

Residents at the complex reported seeing the boy, who was shoeless and dressed in just a T-shirt and shorts, riding his bicycle after 12:30 a.m. Some said he asked for food.

Officers now say it is possible the child never went home that night. The case remains under investigation.
