The Burke County volleyball team is ranked second in the 3-AAAA region as they set their sights on the championship this weekend.

The Lady Bears (9-6, 2-2) took the second seed after losing a tiebreaker to Cross Creek (5-10, 1-3) last Thursday in the last region match of the regular season.

Academy of Richmond County (8-6, 2-0) will enter the region tourney as the top seed.

“It was a tough match that went back and forth,” Head Coach David Skinner said of the Cross Creek matches. “We won the first match, 25-21, and lost the second match, 25-23 … untimely passing and hitting errors were our undoing.”

That forced a tiebreaker which proved a battle from start to finish.

The Lady Bears fell short by just two points.

They were led by junior Rakashia Proctor with 6 aces, junior Quin’Deja Hamilton with 2 kills, and junior Tyliahia Williams with 2 kills.

The Lady Bears played 2-AA Atlanta Tech Charter in the next game of the tri-match and won both sets, 25-12 and 25-11. They were led by sophomore Quin’Neshia Hamilton with 4 aces and senior Marquella Wynn with 3 kills.

“Our girls have worked extremely hard all season. That hard work has paid off so far as we’ve met one of our goals this season by making history again this year.” Coach Skinner said of the second-seed finish. “Though we wanted the number one position, our girls are proud to have made history for our program again this year. Now, our sights are set on doing what has never been done in Burke County volleyball by becoming the first back-to-back region champions.”
