10 YEARS AGO – JULY 4, 2012

Former BCHS baseball standout Brandon Love signed a free agent contract to pitch for the Los Angeles Angels. He was a senior at Mercer University, where he had an overall record of 23-9, 231 strikeouts and a 4.48 ERA.

Holly Rachelle Whitfield, 23, pleaded guilty to felony charges of enticing a child for indecent purposes and child molestation and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. The incident took place at River Quest School in Midville.

Cedric Sanchez Rhodes, 27, was charged in connection with armed robberies of the Huddle House and A&W One-Stop. He was also implicated in armed robberies in Millen and Wadley.

25 YEARS AGO – JULY 2, 1997

Waynesboro Mayor Martin Dolin said he would complete his term in office in spite of the closing of his business, Dolin’s Department Store, after 75 years of operation here.

The Waynesboro Police Department received a permit to operate radar speed detection devices on the Waynesboro Bypass.

Chief Superior Court Judge William Fleming denied a motion for a directed verdict of acquittal in the murder trial of Willie Palmer, accused of killing his wife and her daughter in 1995.

50 YEARS AGO – JUNE 28, 1972

The Board of Trustees of Boggs Academy voted to spend $100,000 for the construction of a heated swimming pool and a bath house on the school campus. The funds were the result of several large gifts to the school.

“DeLight’s Brigade,” a 4 year-old Walking Horse stallion owned by Mr. and Mrs. W.N. Brooks of Waynesboro, won top honors in competition in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

Everett A. Ellison of Waynesboro was awarded the Silver Wings of an Army aviator during ceremonies at Fort Rucker, Ala. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ellison.

70 YEARS AGO – JULY 3, 1952

Waynesboro native Dr. A.M. Hillhouse was appointed professor of public administration at Cornell University. He was a specialist in municipal administration and public finance.

Officials from the Georgia Department of Public Health were expected to be on hand for the dedication of the new $64,000 Burke County Health Department building.

First National Bank of Waynesboro published its quarterly Statement of Condition which showed assets of $2,277,455.17
