10 years ago: March 27, 2002

Ten-year-old Joe Shepherd of Waynesboro won an all expensepaid trip to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Work was nearing completion to repair the drainage gate to the spillway of Jones Lake in Waynesboro. The lake had been drained for several weeks while repairs were being done.

Advertisers included Rhodes-Murphy Tax Service, The Briar Patch, Burke County Upholstery and Liberty Antiques.

The Sardis City Council voted unanimously to oppose the construction of a Navy airfield in the county.

25 years ago: March 26, 1987

The final route for the Savannah River Parkway was announced by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Sixteen-year-old Melissa Mann was crowned queen in the 14th annual Miss Burke County Pageant. Julie Cochran was first runner up.

Construction was underway on Georgia Power Company’s new operating headquarters on Woodland Road in Waynesboro.

SGA High School students participating in the Region 4-A Literary meet included Pam Washington, Rocky Sams, Marvette Holmes, Amy Jenkins, Alicia White, Jerry Johnson, Lisa Mobley and Keith Lambert.

50 years ago: March 28, 1962

Waynesboro civic and business leader John Gardner died at age 64 after suffering a heart attack while playing golf at the Waynesboro Country Club. He was general manager of Perfection Industries and was serving as president of both the Waynesboro Rotary Club and the country club.

Waynesboro native Dr. Leon Zalkow was promoted to associate professor of chemistry at Oklahoma State University.

“Blue Hawaii” starring Elvis Presley was playing at the Grand Theatre.

75 years ago: March 26, 1937

Dr. Abe J. Davis was appointed commissioner of the newly established Burke County Health Department.

Burke County farmer James Corley reported that he had rescued a 2-month-old pig that had been at the bottom of an abandoned well for over a month.

“Love is News” starring Tyrone Powers and Loretta Young was playing at the Grand Theatre.
