Diane Gresham remembers when lupus stopped her from working.

For years, she’d enjoyed helping customers at Alltel and then as assistant manager at the Jet Food Store in Waynesboro.

But in 2011, after living with lupus for several years already, the arthritis became too much to bear on the job.

Last December, kidney failure set in and has demanded regular dialysis ever since.

Now, the 45-year-old mother of two has a chance to end her dialysis treatments with a transplant.

The transplant team at Georgia Health Sciences Medical Center has determined she’s a suitable candidate for a kidney transplant and is willing to add her name to the waiting list.

However, she must first prove she has the savings to make the transplant happen once a match is found. Gresham needs to raise $5,000, which is 50 percent of her total $10,000 goal, by Jan. 31, 2014 for her name to be added to the list.

“The sooner you get on the list, the better,” she said, adding there are so many in need of transplants.

Gresham, along with her family and friends, have been selling dinners, holding raffles and accepting donations to reach the $5,000 mark.

If anyone in the community would like to contribute, they may do so by bringing checks to the Waynesboro branch of Capital City Bank, where a special account has been set up.
