This time, second place wasn’t an option.

The Edmund Burke Academy Lady Spartans tallied 129 team points last Wednesday at Gatewood to earn top honors. After coming in second place a few weeks ago at the Gator Relays, the Lady Spartans improved enough in some areas to capture the meet win. They finished 31 points ahead of runner-up Brentwood and 47 points ahead of Gatewood. Briarwood finished in fourth place with 36 points.

Sophomore Leila Eastmead dominated at the meet, earning the most individual points of any athlete. She also broke three school records and finished in the top two in each event she participated in. East- mead’s triple jump distance of 33 feet 8 ½ inches beat the previous school record from 2005 held by Kasey Land Blaxton. She beat Sally Kate Blackburn’s school record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.81 and bested her own school record in the 300m hurdles posting a time of 48.98. Eastmead was also a member of the 4x800m relay team that finished first and the 4x400m relay team that placed second.

Payton Palmer earned big numbers for Edmund Burke as well, finishing first in the high jump, second in the 400m dash and fourth in the 200m dash. She was also a member of the second place 4×400 relay team. Other first place finishes included Kensy Felix in the 1600m run, Abi Wilcher in the 3200m run, Carly Johnson in the long jump and Addison Riggs in the discus throw. The team win is a big momentum boost as the Lady Spartans prepare for the region finals in just two weeks.
