The Burke County Lady Bears will play Thomson for the region championship after slamming Hephzibah in the second round of the 3-AAAA playoffs Monday.

The Lady Bears (14-10, 9-1) shut down Hephzibah (9-17, 5-5), 9-0, in the first game and 13-1 in game two.

“We got good pitching both games, we played good defense and we had a good approach at the plate,” Head Coach Lee Smoak said. “We have played some really tough non-region opponents lately and it has paid off for us so far in the region tournament.”

The Lady Bears’ junior Erin Land kept Hephzibah off the scoreboard for all five innings she was on the mound in game one. Senior Grace Coalson was 1-3 with 2 RBIs and senior Aubrey Mallard hit 1-2 getting an RBI as well. Junior Trianna Cooper hit 2-2 and got an RBI. Sophomore Kalyn Waldrop hit 1-3 against the Lady Rebels.

In game two of the double header, the Lady Bears jumped ahead to an early lead and captured a 13-1 victory. Twelve runs in the first three innings allowed the Bears to put the game away early.

Seniors Sara Mitchell and Kayla Lambert both hit 3-4 and Lambert got 3 RBIs. Senior Emily Price and Coalson both hit 1-3 with Price grabbing 1 RBI and Coalson picking up 3. Both Mallard and Cooper were 1-2 with Cooper picking up an RBI. Sophomore Savanna Loper hit 1-3.

Coach Smoak said they hope to use this momentum as they play Thomson in the region championship on Thursday.
