Jerry Thomas Brookins


 

 

Jerry Thomas Brookins, 85, was called home to live eternally with his Savior on Friday, Feb. 26, 2021. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Hephzibah, Ga. after an extended illness.

Born in Augusta on Nov. 9, 1935, he was preceded in death by; his parents, Frank Parker Brookins of Sardis, Ga. and Bertie Thomas of North Augusta, S.C.; his grandparents, Judge and Nellie Brookins of Burke County; and Meta Thomas of North Augusta, S.C.; children, Sherry Lee Lowe, Susan Marie Lowe and son Kerry Hanks; and grandson, Joey Parker Inglett of Augusta.

He is survived by; his loving wife of 59 years, Alta Anderson Brookins; children, Jerry Lowe (Cathie) of Tierra Verde, FL, Kevin Hanks Brookins (Veronica) of Anaheim, CA, Jeff Lowe (Debbie) of Eden, UT, Anita Diane Baggitt (Keith) of Merritt Island, FL, Tiffany Brookins Gunder (Shawn) of Hephzibah, GA, Linda Niegowski (Mike) of Barnwell, SC; grandchildren: Lindsey Elliott, Jacob Elliott, Joshua Bradham, Elijah Bradham, Riley Bracewell Jami Bracewell, Heather Lowe, Melissa Lowe, Jessica Lowe Manning, Jeff Lowe, Jr; Brandie Zundell; Elizabeth Brookins Schmidt, Victoria Brookins King; Ryan Lowe, Caroline Carson Lowe; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Waynesboro and worked at International Paper (Continental Can/Forest Industries, Federal Paper) for 38 years, retiring in 2007. He served first in the U.S. Navy then U.S. Air Force for a total of eight years.

He spent most of his life in Sardis, Ga., enjoying golfing, cooking, travel, dancing, singing, and telling jokes to anyone who would listen. Mostly, he loved his family, and enjoyed his life with his “bride” of 59 years whom he lovingly called “Moosie”.

He would want to be remembered for his love of people and his family.
