If Mark Black were the mayor of Waynesboro, he’d set up a blog on the city’s website. He’d make sure he was a “team player” and try to create jobs so college graduates would return to their hometown.

At Monday night’s city council meeting, the Burke County sixth grader was honored as this year’s winner of the “If I Were Mayor” essay contest.

City officials also recognized EBA students Dalton Reeves, second place, and Haley Eubanks, third place. Benjamin Farrow, a sixth grader at Burke County Middle School, received honorable mention.

More municipal-centered events are on tap for Georgia Cities Week, including a “Party Downtown with the Mayor” 3-5 p.m. Thursday in Good Day Café parking lot. On Friday, an Arbor Day celebration will be held at 10 a.m. on the Greenway Trail (next to old TG&Y building), followed by “Hotdogs at the Park” at noon.

If I were mayor, I would be proud to be the leader of our beautiful city of Waynesboro. The mayor should work with city and county officials and support our law enforcement. The mayor should be a team player in management on the city’s budget. Most of all, the mayor should support education.

As mayor, I would listen to citizens’ concerns by hosting town meetings. I would also set up a blog on the City of Waynesboro webpage. It is important to give all citizens a voice.

As mayor, I would work with city and county officials to help bring retail and industry to our town. We need more job opportunities for our citizens. Many times when our children leave Waynesboro to go to college they never return because there are no jobs available.

I would support our law enforcement to help keep our citizens and children safe in the city. Chief Alfonzo Williams has added a Citizens’ Patrol and other programs since he took office. These programs will benefit all of us and as mayor I would help him continue them.

Managing the budget is not always fun, but with the help of our city administrator, I believe as mayor we can fund each department based on plans for improvement. We should develop a five year plan for the future and consider our expenses and expected income.

If I were mayor, I would give my full support to educating our children so that they can graduate and attend college. I would ask our churches to help and give family support.
