Georgia businesses welcome home Georgia’s National Guard

In mid-April, the Georgia National Guard’s 48th Infantry Brigade will be coming home from Iraq.

The returning troops, about 4,300 reservists from units across Georgia, were deployed to Iraq last May leaving behind their families, friends and coworkers to help fight the war on terrorism in the Middle East.

“These men and women are our neighbors, our employees, our friends and our family members, and they deserve a hero’s welcome,” George Israel, president & CEO of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, said. “They are the seed-planters of democracy in Iraq and Afghani

stan and the frontline fighters in the war on terrorism. When they return, they will need our help, support and assistance.”

“Georgians – and Georgia’s business community – have a long tradition of honoring those who serve in our military,” Israel stated. “These men and women are as committed, as brave and dedicated as any who have ever worn the uniform and we are proud of each one of them.”

This year, Gov. Perdue signed into law the “GI Bill for Georgia,” a program that will provide Georgia National Guard and Reserve members returning from combat zone service with

educational grants of up to $2,000 a year for up to four years of study at a Georgia college, university or technical college.

“Please make the extra sacrifice and effort to make every accommodation possible for “Georgia’s Guard” when they call on you,” Israel added. “As job creators and good corporate citizens, please honor the sacrifices these men and women have made and do whatever you can to assist in their transition and return to our state.”
