Electric cooperatives make $ 10M- plus tax payment





 

 

Representatives of Planters EMC, Jefferson Energy and Oglethorpe Power Corporation presented a check for $10,162,626.60 to Burke County Tax Commissioner Cynthia McManus, second from left. The money represents 2011 ad valorem taxes paid by Oglethorpe Power for facilities it owns in Burke County – primarily the Alvin W. Vogtle nuclear plant. Oglethorpe Power owns 30 percent of the existing Vogtle nuclear units, one and two, and 30 percent of the two new generating units, three and four, which are currently under construction.The two new units are scheduled to become operational in 2016 and 2017.Oglethorpe Power is a wholesale electric power cooperative owned by and serving 39 Electric Membership Corporations (EMCs) in Georgia, including Planters EMC and Jefferson Energy, which provide retail electric service in portions of Burke County and other area counties. Statewide, Oglethorpe Power is expected to pay about $27 million in 2011 ad valorem taxes for power-generating facilities that it owns throughout the state.
