EBA softball opens session with big win

The Lady Spartans softball team opened the 2020 season on the Lt. Col. Richard E. Moore Field by defeating Robert Toombs 10-2 last week. Following the top of the first, the girls were behind 2-0, but they answered with 2 runs after a base hit from senior Anslie Glisson. Head coach Larry Keller said from there on, it was all Spartans, with superb pitching from junior Avery Wallace, who also contributed 2 hits on the Lady Spartan offense. Others earning hits for Edmund Burke were senior Morgan Clark, Alaina Boulineau, eighthgrader Addison Riggs and Marley Mobley. The game concluded as senior All-Region second baseman Claudia Eastmead snared a line drive to double off the lead runner. On Friday, the Lady Spartans visited Burke County for a bout with the Lady Bears but the game was called at 2-2 due to inclement weather. “Coach Fera and Coach Stewart do such an outstanding job with their girls; it’s fun to get together and also good for the girls,” Coach Keller said, adding that senior shortstop Malana Williams shined in the game, continuing “her torrid pace” getting 2 hits to go with the 2 she had against Toombs. “Malana has really worked hard this summer and it shows,” Keller said. “The senior is 4-5 and has been flawless in the field.” During Friday’s game, sophomore outfielder Kelsey Jaquess also had a hit. The team is rounded out by freshman Kallie Dailey and eighthgraders Kensy Felix, Emmie Walden, Zylie Baker and Bessie Harper. In addition to Keller, the Lady Spartans are also coached by Randy Broxton, Bailey Jones and Adam Brett. EBA played Pinewood Tuesday, but results were not available at press time.
