DOT meeting for Sardis bridge replacements next week

Construction has begun on a 19-mile stretch of State Highway 23 in Burke County. ATC Site Construction began patching activities on the $3.9 million project Tuesday. According to Kyle Collins, spokesman for the Georgia Department of Transportation, the total project should be complete in two to three months, weather permitting.

Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes, if possible, because the work will necessitate lane closures throughout the process. Collins said, “the initial phases will mean shorter lane closures, but final asphalt topping could mean up to a twomile closure.”

In addition, the DOT is inviting citizens to view plans for the upcoming State Route 23 bridge replacements over Brier Creek and Brier Creek Overflow in Burke County.

Collins said the proposed project will rebuild the bridges north of Sardis, which requires an off-site detour during construction. The length of the work and associated roadway improvements is 1,400 feet. Construction cost for both bridges is currently estimated at $4.2 million with contract letting programmed for June 2020.

Both bridges have low sufficiency ratings and were built in 1962. The two structures are currently posted for weight restrictions.
