Burke girls shine in Jeff Davis invitational

Though their competition plans changed last minute, Burke County’s female tracksters didn’t let that keep them from another first place finish. While the girls and boys teams were both scheduled to compete in the Tiger Invitational on Saturday, the event was cancelled and the girls instead participated in the first ever Jeff Davis Girl’s Invitational in Hazlehurst, earning first place over Telfair and Jeff Davis high schools.

Head coach Purvis Dukes said they had a great meet down in South Georgia, especially since the girls were able to run against other schools they normally see during track season. “We had several girls make contributions on the day, and most of our times/ jumps/throws increased from the previous week. This group is working extremely hard and they are very competitive.”

First place winners from Burke County included the 4×100-meter relay team of Sarah Abumere, J’Dynn Allen, Janiyah Gardner and Shania Lovette with a time of 49.24 seconds; Abumere in the 400- m (1:01.12); Hope Rhaney in the 3,200-meter (14:30.86); Kianni Westbrook in the 100- m hurdles (16.61) and the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches); and ArN’yya Walden in discus (100’2”).

Up next, the Bears travel to Evans on Thursday, April 4, where they’ll compete against Lakeside beginning at 4 p.m.
