Burke County golfers working on short game

A young Bears team continues to gain experience on the golf course.

Last week, the boys and girls competed in an away match against Jefferson County, despite not having a full boys team (due to testing obligations) and no competition for the girls. Head coach Wade Marchman says they went to play for the experience and a chance to continue improving their golf game by playing a new course. On the day, Chris Davis shot a 55 and Josh Brantley, 58. For the girls, Sophie Dye recorded a 47, while Morgan Chancey shot a 54. Murray Flowers shot a 56, Karleigh Taylor, 57, and Libby Ford, 58.

On Thursday, March 29, Burke County hosted Grovetown and Davidson at the Waynesboro Country Club. For the Bears, Cody Templeton shot a 43, Davis, a 56, and Brantley, 58, against Davidson. Grove town did not have a full boys team, also due to testing.

The girls low shooters for the day, Dye (46), Chancey (47) and Ford (51), combined for a team total 144 against Grovetown’s girls, who shot 138. Other Lady Bears in the competition were Mary Beth Mallard (55), Taylor (56) and Trinity Wright (63). Davidson did not have a team.

“They are getting better every day,” Marchman said of both the boys and girls teams, adding that they still need to improve on their short game. “As that continues to get better we will see the scores improve. Each one of them is working hard.”

The Bears played Edmund Burke Academy at the WCC on Monday, April 1, but results were not ready at press time. The boys will compete against Lakeside at the Westlake Country Club on Thursday, April 4, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
