Bears golf team preparing for the area tournament

The Burke County boys and girls golf teams are looking forward to the Area Tournament which takes place on May 3 and 4. After finishing in the middle of the pack at the TaylorMade Invitational earlier this season, the Bears and Lady Bears have been practicing and playing in matches at a variety of courses. Hopefully the experiences gained from this will help both teams perform well moving forward.

On March 3, the boys traveled to play nine holes at the Jack Hill State Park Course in Reidsville, Georgia. They played against Vidalia and won 171-178. Parker Petit led the team with 39.

On April 12, both teams traveled to Black Creek golf course to play against Southeast Bulloch and Savannah Christian. The Burke County boys lost with a score of 182. Southeast Bulloch shot 152 and Savannah Christian shot 173. Dale Fulcher and Caleb Price each lead the team with 43. For the girls, Southeast Bulloch also won, shooting 125, while Savannah Christian shot 147 and the Lady Bears shot 172.

On April 13, the boys and girls hosted a home match at the Waynesboro Country Club against Statesboro and Lakeside. For the boys, Statesboro won, scoring 172 while Burke County scored 178. They were led by Parker Petit with a score of 42 and Sam Kyzer who had 43. The girls won by a narrow margin, scoring 107 against Lakeside (108) and Statesboro (112.)

They were led by Layla Nunnally who scored 50 (only two scores were counted from each team.)

For the boys, seniors Dale Fulcher and Caleb Price have consistently led the Bears with scores of 80 to 84, but Parker Petitt, Sam Kyzer, John Garrett Chance, Luke Marchman, Joshua Godbee, and Nathan Weeks are also playing well.

Currently, the Lady Bears consist of Alli Osborne, Layla Nunnally and Brylie Mallard. They have each been working diligently on specific areas of their game. This practice is paying off as each shot their best scores at their last tournaments. Moving forward, the main goal is to continue to improve, understanding that–like all sports–this improvement is a process.
