The Burke County Bears baseball team ended its season last week with two losses to Redan High School from DeKalb County. Both games were played Tuesday, May 10 with Redan winning game one 11-5 and Burke County dropping a 7-4 lead in the top of the fifth to lose game two 19-9.
BCHS had reached the “Elite 8” in the state playoffs for the first time in the school’s history. Head Coach Billy Marchman said, “The environment was extraordinarily hostile and we fought hard, battling back into the game in both contests.” After reviewing the stats, Marchman said it was clear the Bears had some numbers which indicated there was no way to overcome an opponent with their talent.
BCHS had had runners on base every inning and over 14 innings scored 14 runs, but left 52 runners on base. Marchman said, “We actually hit the ball better in this series than we did in the previous two series. But, Redan was potent as they hit 6 home runs – mostly 2 and 3 run homers. They added 3 more doubles and 7 singles to that stat line. We struggled with placing their hitters in too many 3-2 counts that resulted in 24 walks over the 2 games along with 6 hit batters with pitch, and 7 errors defensively.”
Marchman added that it was an uncharacteristic game for the Bears as they have been very good all season with pitching, catching, and defense. “We never quit though, and I felt the energy from the opponent’s dugout as I overheard the coaching staff telling their players to ‘keep playing’. They were still fighting throughout the night.”
Marchman issued the following statement:
“I am very proud of all the accomplishments this team has earned and achieved together this season. We were 27-8 including our scrimmage game. We hosted the first and second rounds of the state playoff series in front of an awesome home crowd both weeks. We reached a top 10 ranking in the state and made an Elite 8 third-round appearance. Our faithful fans supported us with a cheer rally in town as we left for the series that we enjoyed. We have two players furthering their baseball careers to play in college next season. We have three players attending the Augusta Area High School Sports Award ceremony to receive recognition for their achievements. It has been a blessing to have so much fun with a group of young people and this season will be one to remember for years to come. Thank you to all that support “OUR TEAM”!! Go Bears!!
