The BCHS Varsity baseball team took the lead late in the game in an 11-3 victory over Emanuel County Institute on Wednesday. The game was tied at three with the Bears batting in the top of the eighth when Phillip Hodges singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.
Burke County secured the victory thanks to eight runs in the eighth inning. Hodges, Jahkari Howard, Marshall Flowers, Myles Heatwole, and Brice Marchman each had RBIs in the big inning.
Emanuel County Institute fired up the offense in the first inning. Jack Walden drove in one when Walden doubled.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Bears tied things up at three. Howard drew a walk, scoring one run.
Howard was the winning pitcher for the Bears. The “fireballer” went two and a third innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out six and walking one.
Joseph Stewart toed the rubber for ECI. The hurler allowed four hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out two and walking one. Charlie Rehburg, Gabe Lee, and Kanyon Thompson each contributed in relief for Emanuel County Institute.
Flowers started the game for Burke County. The pitcher lasted five and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out nine
The Bears tallied 13 hits. Marchman, Howard, Hodges, and Heatwole all collected multiple hits. Marchman went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead in hits.
ECI collected five hits on the day. Bryce Kearson and Rehburg all managed multiple hits.
Head Coach Billy Marchman said it was a “solid win, especially given that with one out into the 7th inning and down by 3 runs with no runners on base we rallied to push the game into extra innings. Then our offense steamrolled them in the 8th. Pitching and catching was outstanding throughout the eight innings by our staff.
