Thursday, April 17 the Burke County tennis teams played region tournament held at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta, Georgia. Both the boys and girls teams played well–as they have all season–and won second place trophies.

The boys team started the tournament against Cross Creek. For those who can remember the smack down from earlier this season, this match was easily won. From there, they moved on to face the number two seeded Morgan County. The boys were able to avenge themselves from their regular season loss by beating Morgan County in the semifinals. Unfortunately, the boys fell short against ARC out of Augusta in the finals, securing second place.

The girls also started off against Cross Creek. From there, they moved on to face the number two seeded Harlem. This was an interesting matchup because the Burke County girls weren’t able to play against Harlem during the regular season due to Harlem not having a full team. The girls prevailed, however and moved on to the finals. There, they lost to Morgan County, locking in second place.

Girls team: (l-r) Marlisa Walker, Janiya Walker, Kennedy Roberts, Ashlee Ray, Kyleigh Egan, Josalyn Roberts, Bridgitt Sloop, Madison Martin, Coach Laurie Dickey

Coaches Daniel Hance and Laurie Dickey said they were proud of how their players finished the regular season, and they wanted to send a thank you to all those who came out and supported the teams at their various matches. “For those who see a tennis player around Waynesboro, make sure to congratulate them on their hard work this season,” the said.

Now, both the boys and girls teams await state matches which are to take place next week. If all goes as planned, Burke County will be playing in the State Finals on May 14, 2022 at Berry College.
