BC Grand Jury indicts McCardell on 15 counts



The Burke County Grand Jury has indicted Kevin Mc- Cardell on 15 charges including, four counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

McCardell has been charged for pointing a handgun at Officer Steven Kophazy and for shooting at Officers James Wylds, Michael Murphy and Cory Barr.

The incident occurred on Nov. 16 last year when Mc- Cardell met the Burke County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Response Team (SRT) at the front door of his residence on Southside Drive holding two toddlers and brandishing a pistol.

Initially, he fired a shot at BCSO deputies. After a 5-hour standoff in which he fired two more shots, an SRT team member fired his weapon, wounding McCardell in the leg. He was taken into custody after he was treated on the scene for the wound and transported to Augusta University Hospital where doctors later amputated McCardell’s leg as a result of the gunshot wound.

He was also indicted on five counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. McCardell was charged with two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree for barricading minor children inside of the home during an armed standoff.

He was also charged with two counts of false imprisonment for violating the personal liberties of the children. Another charge for false imprisonment stems from confining and detaining the children’s mother, Rebecca Crews. Mc- Cardell is also charged with simple battery, family violence for pushing and kicking Crews.
