A HUGE FAKE

Car repo turns up $13-grand

More than $13,000 in counterfeit money was found inside a repossessed BMW.

The discovery was made last Wednesday after two Atlanta repo men used a GPS locator to track the defaulted 2006 sedan to the Waynesboro Wal-Mart parking lot.

They were in the process of returning the car to the dealership when they noticed a strange odor and pulled over in a church parking lot.

They called deputies after the smell led them to a stash of marijuana and a stack of $100 bills.

According to Sgt. Dedric Smith, chief investigator for the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, nearly two ounces of marijuana were inside the BMW, including 19 smaller bags that appeared to be packaged for resale.

There were two separate stacks of counterfeit bills – one in the console and another in a gym bag along with workout clothes and a basketball.

Altogether, there were 131 fake $100 bills totaling $13,100.

Though a few of the bills were poorly cut, the print job was passable.

“The quality was good enough that a bill would probably pass if it were mixed in with other money,” Sgt. Smith said.

Officers are still trying to determine whose name will be on the arrest warrants.

The car was registered in the name of a 27-year Waynesboro man, but he claims his cousin had possession of the vehicle.

On Tuesday, investigators were in the process of reviewing Wal-Mart security footage to see who was behind the wheel.

That person will face charges of forgery in the second degree and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

“The secret service will be coming here to talk to him,” Sgt. Smith said.
