6th-grade contest underway

If I Were Mayor

Waynesboro Mayor George DeLoach wants to get an earful from local sixth-graders.

The annual “If I Were Mayor” essay contest is underway, providing students a chance to tell city officials what Waynesboro would be like if they were elected mayor.

Last year’s winning essay was written by Edmund Burke Academy sixth-grader Seth Paulk and included his ideas about using Waynesboro’s rich history to promote tourism, renovating older buildings and creating local tax incentives to bring in more businesses.

Paulk’s essay not only swept the local level but earned the top spot in District 7 competition, beat- ing out 142 sixth-graders from 13 counties including Richmond, Columbia, McDuffie and Jefferson.

Sixth-graders who would like to participate in this year’s competition must submit duplicate copies of their essays to Waynesboro City Hall and the Georgia Municipal Association in Atlanta by March 7.

A panel of city officials will judge them on creativity, grammar, sincerity and clarity.

The top four local competitors will receive prizes and be honored by Mayor DeLoach and council members at a special city council meeting. State winners will receive $250 savings bonds.

The contest is open to all sixth-graders who live or attend school in Burke County.

Entry forms for the 2008 competition are available at Waynesboro City Hall or at www.gmanet.com.
