Video captures brutal attack

ROY F. CHALKER JR.

One man is in custody and more arrests are expected after the brutal beating of a man in Magnolia Acres on Sunday afternoon. Dedrick Phillips, 32, of Augusta is in custody at the Burke County Detention Center and has been charged with aggravated battery for the attack on Bradford Benefield, Jr., a resident of the neighborhood.

The assault was recorded on video and has been widely viewed on social media. It can be seen on the FaceBook page of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office. A number of gunshots can also be heard on the video and they are also being investigated.

Major Cedric Duncan of the Waynesboro Police Department said Tuesday that more arrests are possible as the investigation proceeds. “We’re talking to the District Attorney about what related charges could be brought against those witnesses who failed to render aid to the victim, as well as other potential charges,” Duncan said.

Acting WPD Chief Tommy Henderson said that the department has not yet identified any gang affiliation connected to the incident, but that possibility is being further investigated as well.

The victim was taken to the Burke Medical Center and transferred to an Augusta hospital. According to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, which is assisting in the investigation, Benefield has an outstanding Richmond County warrant and the authorities there have been advised of his location.
