NOTICE OF DETOUR APPROVAL
BURKE COUNTY
P. I. #0013736
Notice is hereby given that the Georgia Department of Transportation has
approved the use of and the routing
of a detour for this project.
The date of detour approval is: January 28, 2019
The project proposes to replace the
bridge (ID 033-0020-0) on SR 56 over
Mill Creek near the City of Midville
in Burke County, Georgia. SR 56 is
a two-lane rural facility with one 12-
foot lane in each direction of travel
and variable width grass shoulders.
The existing right-of-way is 100 feet.
The project begins 760 feet south of
the existing bridge and extends 440
feet northward. The proposed typical section is two 12-foot lanes with
10-foot shoulders, 4 feet of which is
paved. The proposed right-of-way
varies from approximately 100 feet
to 140 feet.
The proposed detour (approximately
6.4 miles in additional travel distance)
will mostly affect the northeast/southwest patterns along SR 56, which is
proposed to be closed to through
traffic from its intersection with SR
305 in Midville to its intersection with
SR 24/SR 80 near Waynesboro.
Drivers travelling northeast on SR 56
from Midville towards Waynesboro
will be informed by detour signs that
SR 56 is closed to through traffic at
Jones Street (SR 305) and directed to
make a slight left onto SR 305 North
in the city of Midville for 15.2 miles.
At the intersection of SR 305 and
SR 24, motorists will be directed to
turn right onto SR 24 (Main Street) in
Vidette towards Waynesboro for 13.0
miles. A sign identifying SR 56 North
at its intersection with SR 24 will end
the detour.
Drivers travelling west on SR 56
(SR 24/SR 80) from Waynesboro
towards Midville will be informed by
detour signs that SR 56 is closed to
through traffic at Lovers Lane (where
SR 56 diverges from SR 24/SR 80)
and directed to continue west on SR
24 just west of Waynesboro for 13.0
miles. At the intersection of SR 24
and SR 305, motorists will be directed
to turn left onto SR 305 (Railroad
Ave) in Vidette towards Midville for
15.2 miles. A sign identifying SR 56
South at its intersection with SR 305
will end the detour.
During the detour, drivers traveling
north on SR 56 from SR 24 will be
able to access property located between SR 305 and the south side of
Mill Creek, but they will not be able
to continue on SR 56 North across
Mill Creek. Similarly, drivers traveling
south on SR 56 from SR 24/SR 80 will
be able to access property located
between the north bank of Mill Creek
and SR 24/SR 80, but they will not
be able to continue on SR 56 South
across Mill Creek.
Drawings or maps or plats of the
proposed project, as approved, are
on file and are available for public
inspection at the Georgia Department
