The Hunt Continues

DIANA ROYAL

Ten years later, and those familiar bird dog breast cancer shirts with the signature “collared” ribbon are still a Burke County tradition.

The B. Lamar Murray Public Health Center has begun selling its 10th anniversary “The Hunt Continues” T-shirts in order to help promote breast cancer awareness.

Gina Richardson, who serves as the county nurse manager for the health department, says that what began with local medical teams wearing pink on Fridays has really grown over the years. “We have painted this town pink for many years, and all of the proceeds are given back to the community,” she said, adding that each person who has purchased a shirt has been instrumental in paying for biopsies, mammograms and ultrasounds for uninsured and underinsured women in Burke County. “Not only that, but this makes our fifth year of being able to offer two $500 scholarships to local students. This community support makes a difference, and for that, we are thankful.”

This year’s commemorative design comes in three different colors: pink, blue and charcoal and are available in both long and short sleeve. Youth sizes will also be available for purchase this year.

For ordering information, contact the health department at 706.554.3456. The final day for orders will be Friday, Sept. 21.
