The Greater Augusta Family YMCA broke ground on Tuesday, Sept. 11, on its 11th branch facility. Joining representatives from the Y were county commissioners and other civic leaders. The $6.3 million facility is a collaboration with the Burke County Board of Commissioners with support from many other donor organizations, including Georgia Power Company, Dalton Utilities, Oglethorpe Power and Ingevity Inc. Located at 50 Olympic Road in Waynesboro, the Family Y is set to open in the summer of 2019. The 20,000-square foot facility, which has been in planning for six years, will offer a state-of-the-art fitness facility, pool and water park. The new Y will create approximately 40 new jobs, with seasonal jobs flexing up to just under 100. Membership rates will be comparable to existing Y branch rates of a similar size and offerings, with scholarship programs available for those who qualify. The Y provides $2 million annually in scholarships throughout the CSRA for all of its programs. The policy of the Y is no one is ever turned away for their inability to pay.
