Lady Spartans looking for win

The Lady Spartans are trying to find their spark.

They dropped two games on the Diamond last week, bringing their overall record to 0-5.

On Tuesday, Aug. 21, they fell to region foe Briarwood 11-0, despite some outstanding plays in the field, according to head coach Darrell Johnson. “We weren’t able to get the bats going,” he said. “Briarwood threw two seniors who are hard throwers and did not give up a hit for the game.”

On Thursday, though not victorious, the girls were able to put some runs on the scoreboard and finished a game against Pinewood, 6-3.

Johnson said Avery Wallace did a great job on the mound, but the team made 7 errors that resulted in 4 unearned runs.

Edmund Burke was led by Memory Kate Goodin, who was 3-4, and according to Johnson, had “some great defensive plays in the field.” Bailey Jones was 1-3 with a double, and Rylee Cook, Marley Knight, Morgan Clark and Alaina Boulineau were all 1-4.

“We are still struggling to put a complete game together,” Johnson said, adding that errors and not hitting the ball are the team’s downfalls. “Coach Randy (Broxton) and I are continuing to work the girls hard to turn this around. We told the girls you have no chance to succeed if you do not believe in yourself.”

The Lady Spartans played Thomas Jefferson in Louisville yesterday (Tuesday) but results were not available at press time. Prior to the game, Johnson said he felt really good about the matchup. “We put a lot of effort into working on our swing and being more patient at the plate,” he said. “We had one of our best practices so far.”

Up next, the girls are on the road to play David Emanuel Academy on Thursday, Aug. 30. They host Brentwood at home on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Both games are at 4 p.m.
