Girard woman killed in crash

DIANA ROYAL

A Burke County woman lost her life in a crash on Mother's Day.

According to reports from the Burke County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred around 4:10 p.m. on Sunday at the intersection of highways 24 and 25. A vehicle driven by Kimberly S. Godbee, 55, of Girard was struck on the driver's side. Godbee died due to blunt force trauma and internal injuries. The BCSO says the driver of the other vehicle, William Cameron, 42, of Williamston, S.C., appeared to have ran the red light at the intersection. He sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment. Charges are pending.

Godbee's death marks the sixth on Burke County roadways this year.

BCSO Chief Deputy Lewis said the primary causes of crashes with injuries in the county include speed, DUI, following too closely and distracted driving.

"The sheriff’s office takes improving traffic safety very seriously in all 835 square miles of the county and will continue with education, media reminders and enforcement in an effort to reduce crashes and save lives," he said.
