Spartans 3-0 in first week of games

The Edmund Burke Academy Spartans varsity baseball team defeated Augusta Prep 13-0 on Tuesday, Feb. 27, as three pitchers combined to throw a shutout. Sophomore Jonathan Duffie struck out Augusta Prep’s Doby to finish off the game.

The Spartans got things started in the first inning when sophomore Jeremy Gay hit a solo homer. They put up 6 runs in the third inning. Although the Spartans’ bats were on fire, the offensive firepower was led by junior Trent Williams, senior Avery Parker, senior Tyson Post and sophomore Parker Thompson, who each had RBIs in the inning.

Gay led Burke Academy batting 2-4. Sophomore Mason Boswell was the winning pitcher for the Spartans. He allowed 1 hit and no runs over three innings, striking out 4 and walking 1. Duffie and Gay entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

EBA had all cylinders firing on offense on Friday, winning big over Thomas Jefferson Academy 10-1. They got things moving in the first inning, when Post drew a walk, scoring 1 run.

The Spartans scored 4 runs in the fourth inning. Their big inning was driven by a single by Post, a sacrifice fly by Thompson, an error on a ball put in play by senior Kyler Deason and a double by sophomore Blake Harrison. Parker also hit 2 homeruns against the Jaguars. Williams was the winning pitcher for the Spartans. He allowed zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out 5. Duffie threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen. The Spartans racked up 8 hits. Post and Parker all had multiple hits. Parker and Post each collected two hits to lead the Spartans.

The Spartans nabbed the lead late in the game in a 6-4 victory over Westminster Schools of Augusta on Saturday, March 2. The game was tied at four with the Spartans batting in the bottom of the sixth when junior Jaylon Glisson tripled on a 1-1 count, scoring 1 run. After Westminster scored a run in the top of the fourth, the Spartans answered with one of their own. The Spartans then answered when Glisson singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run.

Gay was the winning pitcher for the Spartans. He surrendered 2 runs on 3 hits over four innings, striking out 5 and walking 1. Glisson started the game for the Spartans. He went three innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, striking out 3 and walking 1. Glisson went 2-3 at the plate to lead EBA in hits.

The Spartans played Augusta Christian on Monday, March 5, and John Milledge on Tuesday, March 6, but results were not available at press time. They’ll play Brentwood today (Wednesday) at 4 p.m. at home. EBA heads to Louisville on Friday, March 9, where they’ll face Thomas Jefferson, and hosts Frederica Academy on Tuesday, March 13. Both games are at 4 p.m.
