Library named in Gresham’s honor

A lifelong resident and advocate for the City of Keysville was recently honored as the library at Boggs Rural Life Center was named for her.The Emma Gresham African American Research Library opened its door on Jan. 27, and honored a woman who made it her mission to promote a city dear to her and her family. Many know Gresham for the 17 years she spent as the mayor of the City of Keysville, but her commitments extend that of the city. As a member of Mt. Tabor, she has been active in all areas of her church, serving as secretary of the trustee board and Secretary of the Lay and a Life Member of the Missionary Society. She held the office of Conference Director of the Young Peoples Division of Mission for 16 years and Episcopal Director of the YPD. She was elected to the General Conference six consecutive times, working with the compilation of the A.M.E. Discipline. She is an honor graduate of Boggs Academy and Paine College and also studied at Atlanta University, Augusta State College and the University of Georgia. She is retired from the Richmond County School System after teaching a combination of 32 years including Burke, McDuffie and Talladega (Alabama) counties. She is a member of the National Council of Negro Women and was a board member of the Department of Community Affairs and Adult Education. On April 14, 2000, Gresham was an Essence Awards Honoree at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, and in September of the same year, she was one of the One Hundred Eckerd Women honored by the Eckerd Organization in Washington, D.C. for women with above excellent volunteer records in the United States. Gresham has been a leader, a teacher and a committed mayor, the one who coined this motto for Keysville, “Keysville is a town where Everybody is Somebody.” Mayor Gresham’s interest has always been for the youth in Keysville as she arranged many cultural tours to colleges, universities and museums. The motto for the youth is,” We are the Keys to the future.”
