Senior Simeon Coleman drives the ball in against Cross Creek High School last Tuesday night. Williams scored 13 points for the Bears and rebounded 7. The Burke County Bears (6- 5, 1-1) started out the region schedule by defeating Cross Creek (7-8, 1-1) last Tuesday, Jan. 2, by 60-51. On Friday, Jan. 5, they dropped one to Richmond (7-10, 1-1) 59-58.

Head coach Purvis Dukes said that in last Tuesday’s game against Cross Creek the kids played a good road game for the win.

“We have to get that kind of production from everyone in order to have a chance to win,” he said.

The Bears had four guys in double figures on the night led by senior Zayveon Williams with 16, senior Simeon Coleman with 13 and senior Deontae Carter and junior Jahleel Roundtree with 11 each. Williams had 8 assists on the night with 2 turnovers. Roundtree led the team in rebounding with 8, followed by Coleman with 7.

In Friday night’s loss against Richmond, Dukes said that it was a good road contest in which they had their opportunities to win.

“We were out-rebounded and late. They had a couple of big rebounds where we had a chance to sustain a lead.” Coach Dukes said. “Richmond played hard all game, and I think down the stretch that was the difference in the game. We have to learn from our mistakes and continue to improve.”

The Bears were led in scoring against Richmond by Williams with 22 points and 5 assists. Coleman had 13 and Roundtree 11. Coleman led the team in rebounding with 9, followed by Roundtree with 8.

Over the Christmas break, the Bears played in the Henry County Christmas tournament. They defeated Spalding by 75- 56 on Dec. 28 but lost to Drew Charter School Senior Academy on Dec. 29 by 64-49 and also by Henry County on Dec. 30 by 63-79.
