Lady Bears off to good start

Junior Kianni Westbrook scored 16 points against Midland Valley. Junior Kianni Westbrook scored 16 points against Midland Valley. The Burke County Lady Bears (3-1) had their home opener on Friday night, Dec. 1, defeating Midland Valley 53-37.

Coach Leslie Lawrence said the team played extremely well although they were down by seven at the half to a good Midland Valley team.

“I was extremely proud of our defensive efforts in the second half,” she said, “and we turned a seven-point deficit into an eleven-point lead.”

The Lady Bears were led by junior Kianni Westbrook, who scored 16 points; senior Quin’deja Hamilton, with 12 points; senior Cordaijah Mc- Bride, 11 points; and junior Qua’neshia Hamilton, 10 points.

In the Dec. 2 game against Josey, Lawrence said that they lost to a very good Josey team, 61-51.

“Our team gave a great effort in trimming an eighteen-point deficit to eight points with two minutes remaining,” she said. “Josey played aggressive defense, and turnovers were a key factor in the loss.”

The Lady Bears were led in scoring against Josey by Qua’neshia Hamilton, who scored 18 points; McBride with 11 points; and sophomore Tyasia Freeman, with 9 points and 17 rebounds.
