CAROL EDMONDS CAROL EDMONDS The City of Sardis will be under new leadership come the new year.

Carol Edmonds secured the mayoral position in the city’s runoff election on Tuesday night by 11 votes and made history as the first woman to ever be elected mayor in Sardis. She garnered 101 votes compared to Preston Conner’s 90.

According to Sardis City Clerk Jennie Johnson, 191 of the city’s 592 registered voters showed up for the runoff. Last month, 202 voters participated in the General Election, and just seven votes separated the two contenders.

Conner, the incumbent mayor, has served in the position over the last 14 years. Edmonds stepped down from her seat on Sardis City Council earlier this year to seek the city’s top spot.
