On Friday, Oct. 6, the Edmund Burke Academy Spartans (5-3) played the Wildcats of Westwood School seeking to bounce back from their huge loss against the Bulloch Academy Gators. The Spartans not only defeated but also shut out the Wildcats with a score of 26-0.

The Spartans first touchdown was scored by junior Collier Smith, who ran the ball over 20 yards for the first six points of the game. The Spartan offense was unstoppable and the defense was dynamic. The Wildcats had very few scoring opportunities, but when they got in close range, the Spartan defense took advantage of easy opportunities to make interceptions and get the ball back.

“It feels great to win on homecoming; it has been about four years since we have been able to do that. I thought the guys played really well. We established the run game early which is something that we have to do in order to win games,” commented head coach Aaron Phillips. “We still made a few too many small mistakes. We had three turnovers, which can’t happen this Friday against Frederica.”

The Spartans will play the Frederica Academy Knights this Friday, Oct. 13, for Senior Night. Phillips referred to this game as a “measuring stick” for the Spartans. He says this game will show how far they have come and how much further they need to go. Frederica Academy has two sophomore athletes who already have numerous amounts of offers from D1 colleges. In order for the Spartans to win against the Knights, they will need to keep those two players off the field and perfectly execute their offense.

The Spartans had 42 carries totaling 68 yards while the Wildcats had 37 carries for 120 yards. The Wildcats were also 3-14 passing for 30 yards with 2 interceptions. The Spartans had 2 penalties for 10 yards and the Wildcats had 6 penalties for 55 yards.

Junior Collier Smith led the team, having 14 carries for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns. Freshman Eason Waters also broke 100 yards this week, having 9 carries for 102 yards and scoring 1 touchdown. Senior Gatlin Jenkins also had 1 touchdown for the Spartans.

Juniors Christopher Cooper and Collier Smith had great games on the defensive side of the ball. Cooper had 6 solo tackles, 3 assists and 2 tackles for loss and Smith had 5 solo, 4 assists and 1 tackle for loss. The Spartans had 2 interceptions: one apiece sophomore Mason Boswell and senior Tyson Post.
