James Alfred Simmons, III

Mr. James Alfred Simmons III of Statesboro, age 77, died on Saturday, October 7th, at Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. Mr. Simmons was born on October 9, 1939 in Waynesboro, Ga. to Mr. James Alfred Simmons Jr. and Evelyn Godbee Simmons. He attended college at the University of Georgia and while in school, took over his father’s business which later grew into Simmons Distributing Company. In the 70’s he helped organize the BARC which gave special needs children a place in the school system. He was a volunteer at Habitat Statesboro for 10 years and in his free time, enjoyed golf, tennis, fishing, watching football, and was a very talented dancer. He also loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Mr. Simmons retired in 2005 due to his health and was a resident at Southern Manor Retirement Inn for 3 months. He was a member of Pittman Park United Methodist Church and there he was involved with the men’s Tuesday morning Woody Powell Bible Study. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, James A. Simmons IV, and a granddaughter, Jenee’ Scrima.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Vicki Friedt Simmons of Statesboro, his children, Chris and Beth McGowan Simmons of Statesboro, Renee’ Elizabeth Scrima of Orlando, FL, and Lisa D. Hardy of Statesboro, his grandchildren, Devon (Russ) Smith, Breanne Simmons, CJ Simmons, Ragen Simmons, Brendan Simmons, Robert Paul Humphrey III, Rodney James Humphrey, Elise Nichole Hardy, James Handly, Robert Hardy, and Leslie Ann Hardy, his great-grandchildren, Kohen and Rylie Smith, Damien and Ethan Humphrey, and Maleah Myers, Gabriel Hardy, Cale Hardy, Savannah Richardson and Ryan Richardson, his brother and sister-in-law, Brigham and Kathy Simmons, a nephew, Russell Simmons and wife Alison Simmons, and nieces, Ebie Simmons, and Ella Simmons.

The family received visitors on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Pittman Park United Methodist Church with Reverend Bill Bagwell officiating.

Interment will follow at Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Scott Smith, James Oglesby, Wayne Weddon, David Campbell, Ray Oliver, and Bryce Bunting.

The family would like to give a special thanks to all of the caregivers over the last few years. They would also like to thank Ogeechee Area Hospice for the fine care he was given in his final weeks.
