THURSDAY, OCT. 12

Burke County Retired Educators Association will meet 3 p.m. at Burke County Senior Citizens Center. Guest speaker will be Waynesboro Mayor Gregory A. Carswell.

The Burke County Farm- To-School Program will hold its weekly Farmers Market 4-6 p.m. at the Southern Bank Pavilion located on 855 Liberty St., Waynesboro. The farmers market is now accepting EBT payments.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 18

The Burke County Genealogical and Historical Society meets, 6 p.m., at the Burke County Public Library. Jay and Amy Bauer of Goldsboro, NC, will speak on the 1,154-man 135th United States Colored Troop organized by Gen. William T. Sherman at Goldsboro near the end of the Civil War.

JONES LAKE

Jones Lake will be sprayed with herbicides to control aquatic weeds. Residents are asked to avoid drawing water from the lake between October 21 and October 24. If you are growing plants near the water, please mark them with colorful tape to avoid any accidental damage
