The rodeo is coming

Calling all cowboys and cowgirls
By Diana Royal

Whether you like to throw some rope or watch from the sidelines, it’s time to saddle up for the fifth annual Hat and Spur Ranch Pro Rodeo.

The rodeo, hosted by local cowboy Leroy Lane, is scheduled for Oct. 6-7, and organizers are already busy wrangling participants and sponsors.

The event is sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA), an organization that sanctions hundreds of rodeos annually, and is truly a World Championship Rodeo. Dale Yerigan, general manager for the IPRA, explained that all points earned in Waynesboro count toward winning the ultimate prize of IPRA World Champion in nine individual categories as well as the crown jewel of World Champion All Around. “With Waynesboro being held late in the season, it can play a key role for contestants trying to earn points toward qualifying for the International Finals Rodeo (IFR) in Oklahoma City where the World Champions will be crowned,” he said. “Only the top fifteen in each event qualify for the IFR and rodeos like Waynesboro can give them that late boost to put them over the top. Because of the time of the year the Waynesboro event takes place, it will draw some of the best contestants in professional rodeo.”

Last year saw more than 200 contestants who came from all over the globe, including Canada and Australia. Rodeo events include bareback bronc riding, bull riding, calf roping, cowgirls barrel racing, cowgirls breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling and team roping. Any local cowboys and cowgirls who are interested in competing should email hatandspurranch@gmail.com. Those interested in providing sponsorships should email the same address.

The rodeo will take place at the Hat and Spur Ranch located just off Highway 25 South. Gates will open at 6 p.m. and the rodeo starts at 7:30. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the gate and can be purchased online at www.HatAndSpur- Ranch.com. Children 6 and under get in free.
