The 3-AAAA Burke County Bears head to Fitzgerald to play the 1-AA Purple Hurricanes on Friday night in a preseason scrimmage.

This is the first time the Bears have played the Hurricanes, who made it to state the past two years as first seed.

Burke County head coach Eric Parker says they have been working hard and the kids are ready to play.

“Fitzgerald is a good football team and has a lot of great players. There's a lot of tradition in Fitzgerald and ought to be a really fun atmosphere on Friday," he said.

Parker has been working with the team on the practice field for weeks and says there are a lot of returning players.

“We have a lot of leadership and game experience and that's always something that we look forward to," he said. "I don't know that we have any superstars so to say but I do think we have a lot of really good players that have a chance to help us be pretty special this year.”

Coach Parker briefed the kids after the game, reminding them of their goals.

“Our goals are pretty simple every year. We want to get off to a good start and win the first ballgame. That is always the first goal. We want to get better as the year goes along," he said. "Obviously we would like to win the region championship and take a shot at state.”
