A number of Burke County Middle School Future Farmers of America (FFA) members recently competed in several Career Development Events (CDE) and were recognized for their performances.

Karleigh Taylor, Mattie Collins, Murray Liz Flowers and Morgan Chancey placed fourth in the Area 4 Nursery/Landscape CDE. Taylor also placed third as high individual in the contest.

The Nursery/Landscape CDE is designed to test students’ skills in aspects of maintaining landscape plants and related products, evaluation equipment and services and landscape design through hands-on work and a scenario to work through as a team, as well as a written exam and plant identification test that is done individually.

Keshon Winns competed in the Lawnmower Operations and Maintenance CDE also held at Swainsboro Technical College. He represented BCMS FFA by placing first in the area. He will compete at the state CDE contest in Athens on March 18.

The Lawnmower Operations and Maintenance CDE allows students to demonstrate the skills necessary to safely and efficiently operate a riding mower. Participants in this event take a written exam and answer problem solving questions related to mower servicing, safe operation, care and maintenance. Participants also drive a mower and are tested on mower operations.
